Scientists Build Cyborg Cockroaches That Could Save Lives
scale up: to increase something in size, number, or level, usually to meet higher demand or achieve bigger goals
Cyborg cockroaches might sound like a nightmare, but they could be lifesavers. Scientists in Singapore have invented a way to quickly create these insect robot hybrids. Normally, making one takes 30 minutes, but with their new system, it only takes 68 seconds.
The process uses a robot arm to carefully attach tiny electronics to a cockroach. The insect is first made sleepy with carbon dioxide. Then, the robot implants electrodes and adds a backpack. The backpacks hold tiny control electronics. These electronics send signals that let scientists control how the insect moves.
This new process makes it easier to scale up production to hundreds or thousands of these helpful insects. These little cyborgs can go where larger robots cannot go. One day, they might save lives by searching for survivors in collapsed buildings or other hard-to-reach places.
