Alaskan Airport Has New Robot Guard on Runways
scare off/away: to make someone or something afraid so that they leave
Last year, 92 animals got hit by planes at airports in Alaska. The Alaska Department of Transportation is testing a new type of robot named Aurora. Its mission is to keep runways safe from animals at the Fairbanks airport. Aurora looks like a fox or a coyote and scares away birds and other animals that might be dangerous for planes. This $70,000 robot can move easily in snow and ice and is controlled by a computer inside the airport. The project will also test if Aurora can scare off larger animals like moose and bears. If it works well, Aurora might be used in more airports in Alaska to help keep planes and animals safe.
