Man Scares 1,100 Chickens to Death in Bizarre Act of Revenge
scared to death: to be very frightened
To be scared to death is a common idiom that simply means to be very frightened. That’s not what happened in a strange story coming out of China. A man named Gu was recently found guilty of literally scaring 1,100 chickens to death. These chickens belonged to his neighbor, Zhong. The two men were fighting because Zhong cut down Gu’s trees without asking.
Gu went to Zhong’s chicken farm at night. He used a flashlight, which made the chickens panic so much that many of them died. The first time Gu did this, 500 chickens died. The police caught him, and he had to pay Zhong 3,000 yuan ($436) as compensation. However, he went back and caused the death of 640 more chickens. The court decided that Gu had purposely scared the chickens to death. He was sentenced to six months in prison.
Fear can actually cause animals and humans to die. It can happen during natural disasters or even sports games. When people experience intense emotions, their brain releases chemicals related to adrenaline. This can sometimes harm the heart. While it’s true that you can be literally scared to death, the chances of it happening are very low.
