Using Astronaut Breath to Create Food for Mars

Stafford Sheehan has created a machine that can turn astronauts’ breath into food. This idea is part of the NASA Deep Space Food Challenge.
His company’s machine mixes carbon dioxide from breath, water, and yeast. The yeast ferments the mixture, resulting in a protein-rich substance. It can be dried and shaped into various foods like pasta and tortillas.
It’s estimated that a trip to Mars would take at least seven months. Packing enough food would be much too heavy. However, Sheehan’s machine could set the stage for long-term space missions by providing a way to make food in space.
This invention is not only useful for space. It might also help us on Earth by creating sustainable food that uses minimal resources and produces little waste.
