The Record No One Can Break: 50 Hours of Kissing
slip under the radar: to go unnoticed or not attract attention
Did you know that it is impossible to break some Guinness World Records? The longest kiss is 50 hours and 35 minutes. Ekkachai and Laksana of Thailand, will hold this record for eternity. Guinness will not accept any attempts to break it. They say sleep deprivation makes it too dangerous. Fasting is another record that Guinness does not want you to challenge. Between 1964 and 1965, Angus Barbieri ate no food for 382 days. He survived on liquids and vitamins alone. Guinness recognized Angus Barbieri’s record long fast, but will accept no more challengers. This hasn’t stopped some people from trying risky challenges in hopes of breaking a record. In 1961, Mick Meany spent 61 days buried in a coffin with food and oxygen. When he got out, he was disappointed to learn Guinness was not interested in his record.
Today’s Guinness Book of World Records prioritizes safety, but one risky record continues to slip under the radar. Don Gorske has eaten over 34,000 Big Macs in his life, and Guinness continues to recognize his record breaking achievement each year. Why this category has not been banned is a mystery since it certainly isn’t the safest diet. Gorsky has eaten 2 Big Macs a day for 50 years and he has saved every box and every receipt to prove it. He said, “Many people thought I’d be dead by now, but instead, I’ve been a record holder for my 24th year — one of Guinness World Records’ longer-running record holders, so that’s pretty cool to me.”
