A banana taped to a wall has sold for $6.2 million at an auction in New York. The artwork, called “Comedian,” was created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. The banana is attached to the wall with silver duct tape. Crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun snapped up this unique piece of art at Sotheby’s auction on Wednesday.
When the artwork first appeared in 2019, it caused a lot of controversy. People asked, “Is this really art?” Some called it brilliant, while others said it was absurd. The banana was even removed from display because it attracted too much attention. At one point, another artist ate the banana off the wall, calling it his own art performance! Sun also plans to eat the banana in a few days to honor its place in art history. But the artwork won’t be lost forever. Along with the original banana, Sun also received the exclusive right to tape another banana to a wall and call it “Comedian.”
