Artist Plans to Display Picasso in Women’s Restroom
spark discussion: to start a conversation about something, usually a topic that many people have opinions on
An Australian museum has created a room that only women can enter. This room, which displays a Picasso painting, is called the Ladies Lounge. The room was designed to spark discussion about the historical inequality faced by women. One man who wanted to enter the room complained last year about not being able to experience the art. The artist, Kirsha Kaechele, insists this isn’t true. She said he was able to experience the art because “the exclusion of men is the artwork.” A court disagreed and said the space must be open to all. Kaechele has some creative ideas on how to challenge this decision. She is planning to install a toilet and call it a ladies’ restroom so she can legally exclude men. Another plan is to turn the gallery into a school in which men will be allowed in only to take classes on laundry folding and ironing.
