Cambodia Takes a Stand Against Dancing to Musical Trucks
take a stand: to firmly express your opinion or belief about something, especially when you want to show you disagree with something
In the 1980s, the pop band Men Without Hats published their most well-known song called Safety Dance. It is remembered for its message about the freedom to dance and for its catchy lyrics, “We can dance if we want to.”
Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Hun Manet, probably isn’t a fan of the song. He has taken a stand against a unique problem – trucks with musical horns. These are not normal car horns but ones that play melodies. Social media videos show children dancing to these horns on the side of public roads. It looks like harmless fun, but the prime minister decided it was time to act. He has banned these musical horns to stop any more roadside dance parties. The reason? It’s not safe. Dancing in the street can lead to accidents, and Hun Manet wants to protect his people.
