Humans Wear Fox Masks to Care for Orphaned Baby Fox
take over: to take control of something or responsibility for something, especially when replacing someone else
In a wildlife center in Virginia, staff have found a special way to care for a tiny, orphaned fox – they dress up as foxes themselves! They hope to help the baby fox without her becoming attached to humans.
The baby fox was found alone in a street alley in Richmond, Virginia, by someone who thought it was a kitten. The tiny fox was brought to the wildlife center, and the staff took over her care. They knew she needed more than just food. She needed to know she was a fox. By wearing fox masks and using toys that look like foxes, they hope to teach her about her true identity. They do not talk to the fox and only play nature sounds to her. The baby fox hasn’t yet opened its eyes. Richmond Wildlife Center founder Melissa Stanley said, “While her vision when she first opens her eyes isn’t going to be fully developed, she’ll see an outline. I want that outline and that fuzzy picture to be a fox. We don’t want the first thing that they see in this world to be a human. The goal is to return the baby fox to nature without making any significant human connection.”
