The Hidden Cost of Throwing Things “Away” – Guatemala’s Reality
throw away: to discard something you don’t want
A recent video from a beach in Guatemala shows what happens to some of our garbage when we throw it away. The shore is covered with plastic bottles and overflowing trash. Every wave brings even more trash onto the beach.
This isn’t just Guatemala’s problem. Countries like the United States have been sending large amounts of waste to Latin American nations, including Guatemala. This not only exports the waste problem to these countries but also magnifies the environmental challenges they face.
People in Guatemala are trying to solve this problem. They use “bio-fences” made from old plastic bottles to catch the trash in the water. But this is not enough.
Many people who saw the video were sad and shocked. One person said, “We must stop buying so many things and throwing them away.” Another said, “There is no place called ‘Away.’ Everything we throw away stays on our Earth.”
