Cleaning Up Everest With Drones
time sensitive: something that must be done quickly because waiting too long could cause a problem
Mount Everest is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, but even here, trash is a growing problem. Climbers leave ropes, oxygen bottles, and other waste behind. This garbage is difficult and dangerous to remove.
To help fix this, a company in Nepal is now using drones. These drones can fly up the mountain and bring back trash. In their first cleanup, they removed more than 1,000 pounds of waste. Because each drone only carried about 44 pounds, it took over 40 trips.
The drones are also used to bring equipment like ropes and ladders to help Sherpas with their dangerous job. This helps them work faster and safer. One Sherpa said, “Our work is time sensitive.” If they don’t fix the trails quickly, the climbers will be delayed.
This new technology cannot replace Sherpas, but it can help protect them and keep the mountain clean.
