The Big Business of Cloning Giant Sheep
turn a profit: to make money
In Montana, a rancher’s unusual business involving a giant cloned Argali sheep has ended in court. These massive sheep from central Asia can weigh over 300 kilos. Schubarth illegally imported the animal and made a clone of its embryo for $4,200. A sheep was born from one of the cloned embryos. Schubarth has been breeding the offspring of this clone to sell to hunting farms. By cloning the rare sheep and selling its hybrids, Mr. Schubarth has turned a significant profit. The hybrids were valued between $250,000 and $550,000.
Some worry that the cloning of foreign species could threaten local ecosystems. Another concern is animal welfare in money-making cloning schemes. For this reason, the EU banned cloning farm animals in 2015.
In the US, cloning is not illegal, but Schubarth has confessed to the crime of illegally importing, possessing, and selling an endangered animal.
