Watch a 7,600-Ton Building Walk Through Shanghai
turn heads: to attract a lot of attention because something or someone is surprising, unusual, or impressive
A 7,600-ton building lifting off the ground and walking away is not something you see every day. When an 85-year-old school was relocated to make space for a new building, it likely turned heads in Shanghai.
In the past, buildings have been moved using rails, but the unusual shape of the school made this impossible. Instead, engineers used groundbreaking technology to move it. They attached nearly 200 robotic supports under the building, which acted like legs. Slowly, the building took small steps to move 62 meters to its new spot. The whole process took 18 days.
This is the first time this technology has been used in Shanghai to move a historic building. Now, the school will be turned into a cultural center, preserving its history for future generations.
