The world’s largest living organism grows in the Fishlake National Forest in Utah. Pando looks like a dense forest, but it’s actually a single tree! Spanning 43 hectares, Pando is a massive network of 47,000 stems, all connected by a common root system. It is estimated to be 8-12,000 years old and weighs 6 million kilograms.
People have made recordings of the sounds Pando makes both above ground and underground. Long ago, recordings of whales singing encouraged people to protect them. They are hoping these recordings of Pando will win over listeners and encourage them to save this massive tree.
