A Tragic Journey to a Forbidden Island
work out: to have a good or successful result in the end
In 2018, an American missionary named John Allen Chau lost his life on North Sentinel Island. His goal was to spread Christianity to a tribe isolated from the modern world.
Even though he did not speak their language, Chau thought his mission would somehow work out. After paying some fisherman to take him to the island, he was shot dead with an arrow upon arrival.
Chau was deeply religious and wanted to do good. However, his decision to go to the island was not only risky but also illegal under international law. The tribe is protected and should remain uncontacted.
This tragic story is now the subject of a documentary, “The Mission.” The film explores why Chau did what he did and the ethics of visiting uncontacted tribes.
