NASA’s Seven-Year Mission: Can This Rock Save The Earth?
wreak havoc: destroy; causing lots of damage
A 4.5 billion-year-old rock from space has arrived on Earth! ? This isn’t just any rock. It’s a piece from Bennu, an asteroid as big as the Empire State Building! Scientists think Bennu might hit Earth in 159 years with a force of 22 atomic bombs!
If it lands on a city, the city would be gone. If it hits the ocean, a tsunami could wreak havoc.
Nasa sent a spacecraft on a seven-year mission to intercept the asteroid, grab a sample, and return to Earth.
One of the things scientists hope to learn from this sample is the structural integrity of the asteroid. This might be a clue about whether it will be possible to deflect it to stop it from hitting Earth!
