When a Sun Bear Walks Like a Human!
counterfeit: something that is made to look like something else, usually for the purpose of deceiving people
We’ve all heard of counterfeit money, but counterfeit bears are new. On the popular Chinese social media site Weibo, people were suspicious of a bear at a Chinese zoo. Its upright posture and the unique folds of loose fur on its back made it look like a human in disguise. The zoo denied hiring human actors to dress up as bears.
These suspicions aren’t baseless. Chinese zoos have faced skepticism before. In 2013, a zoo in Henan province caused an uproar by presenting a Tibetan Mastiff dog as a lion. Visitors were surprised when they heard the “lion” bark. Similarly, in Sichuan province, guests found a golden retriever dog in a cage for an African lion. With such history, it’s no surprise people questioned the authenticity of the walking sun bear!
