WHO Warns This is the Health Epidemic of the 21st Century
epidemic: a sudden increase in the number of cases of a disease or problem affecting many people
The World Health Organisation says stress and anxiety will be the health epidemic of the 21st century. Biophilia might be the answer. Biophilia is the love of nature and living things that humans naturally have. Biophilic design brings nature into our buildings. This kind of design has many benefits. In schools, natural daylight helps students learn faster. In hospitals, natural views and light help people heal quicker and need less pain medicine. Offices with lots of plants and views of nature increase well-being and productivity.
A new building in Singapore called CapitaSpring has recently opened. It has 80,000 plants and a “Green Oasis” floor with gardens and small forests. Three rooftop gardens grow food for the building’s restaurants. This 51-story building is an example of how the city and nature can live together.
