Smartphone Addiction Is Not Just A Human Problem
hooked on: to be addicted to something
Amare, a 16-year-old gorilla in the Lincoln Park Zoo is hooked on screens! Often seen by the window, this 415-pound primate loves looking at visitors’ smartphones. Show him pictures or videos, and you’ll see him glued to your device. The staff, however, are worried about this growing smartphone addiction. “His distractions are becoming more frequent, and we’re trying to manage it,” says Stephen Ross, the director at the zoo.
With Amare and his gorilla mates in their teenage years, this is a crucial time for them to learn social behavior. Zookeepers now use a rope to keep visitors and their smartphones away from the windows. Ross says he wants Amare to spend “more time being a gorilla than a screen lover.”
