Explore the Weird and Wonderful World of Thanksgiving Traditions
portmanteau: a word made by combining two different words to make a new word
Thanksgiving is an American holiday for giving thanks for the blessings of the past year. Families and friends come together for a big meal, usually including turkey. However, some people like to try something different, like ‘turducken.’
Turducken is a portmanteau for turkey, duck, and chicken. It’s a chicken inside a duck inside a turkey. This three-layered dish is usually roasted or deep-fried. This does not come without risks. There are 60 injuries, five deaths, and over 15 million dollars in damage to homes each year from deep-frying turkey accidents.
Of course, the biggest danger is not to humans but to Turkey. Forty-six million turkeys are eaten on Thanksgiving. Every year, the US president saves one turkey’s life by pardoning it at a special ceremony.
