At only 19, Derek Black was a rising star and the pride of his father, who was a leader in a movement called White Nationalism. White nationalism is a very small, but growing racist movement, which is trying to create a white nation by removing people of color.
Imagine having to sit at the back of the bus, just because of your skin color. Less than 100 years ago, it was common in the United States to block African Americans from job opportunities, stores, and restaurants that were only for white people. They were also banned from many public services and forced to use lower quality public toilets, hospitals, and even schools.
Learning isn’t all mental. Scientists are starting to find that physical exercise increases the power of our minds and makes us better learners. Dr. John Ratey is a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. In his book about learning and the brain, he says that we need to exercise our bodies to improve our minds. Exercise doesn’t just increase important brain chemicals, it also helps our brain grow. Ratey says, The cells in our brains are connected “through leaves on tree-like branches and exercise causes those branches to grow.” When we increase our movement, we improve our thinking skills.
