Watch the Lesson 7 Video
Over the past week we have given you a number of different kinds of lessons to help you improve your speaking and listening fluency. We have given you Active Listening lessons, Active Speaking lessons and Fluency Booster lessons. Now these lessons were on different topics: Michael Jordan, Thomas Edison, Aron Ralston. We hope you enjoyed these lessons. If you did, you can learn more about these stories in the True Stories English Fluency Course. These are actually short samples from that True Stories course which are much longer and much more in-depth and also push you to really boost your speaking on a daily basis.
If there is one thing that I hope you take away from this course, it’s that your attention is limited. So if you remember that Day 1 card trick video, that’s very important. If you are like most people you are probably focusing very hard on those cards and you missed all the changes happening in the room. So English is the same way. If you focus too much on grammar and vocabulary, you are going to miss the big picture. Now what’s the big picture? The big picture is being able to communicate with confidence and to be able to understand the people around you easily.
So that’s what we teach you to do in the True Stories Fluency Course. These lessons are carefully designed to lead you in a process of improving your speaking and your listening. Now the way we chose these lessons is we focused on interesting and meaningful content. Now the short samples you heard, we hope that you found those interesting and meaningful. If you didn’t, I want to encourage you to find the kind of English lessons that you can connect with, that you feel passionate about and that you can connect to deeply because that’s the kind of content that will help you improve your English quickly. If you did feel a connection to these lessons, there are many more inspiring and interesting stories in the True Stories Fluency Course.
One thing I want to talk about today is the need to really use English. We have talked about that a little bit before and we have talked about how using English is different from studying English, and that means listening a lot and speaking a lot. But it also means using English outside of these audio lessons. So I hope that you will take these stories about Thomas Edison and Michael Jordan and about the hiker Aron, and really share them with your friends in person, emails, maybe on Facebook or other social networks. Wherever you are connecting with people, take those stories and share them and that will help really deepen your understanding of the story and also the English that underlies that story, also the grammar and vocabulary that’s in the story. So again, this is not studying that grammar and vocabulary. This is using that English so you can connect more deeply to it and learn in a natural way.
