Lawrence Ripple entered the bank and gave the teller a note that said, “I have a gun, give me money.” Ripple didn’t have a gun, and strangely, he didn’t actually want the money. After the teller handed over $3,000 in cash, Ripple sat down in the lobby and waited for the cops to come. This didn’t take long since Ripple chose a bank with a police station on the same block.
Robot Rights
A mother and her six children were accused of killing a five-year-old boy in Savigny, France in 1457. The mother and children were brought before a court to answer for their crimes. The mother was found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging, but her children were freed. Although the six children had blood on them, no one had witnessed them attacking the 5-year-old boy. It was a standard court case with villagers who had witnessed the crime, a defense attorney, prosecutors, and a judge. The only unusual thing was that the mother who was sentenced to death was a pig, and her six children were piglets.
A Man Without A Name
One day in 1986, Edgar Latulip got on a bus headed for Niagara Falls and then disappeared. Edgar was reported to the police as a missing person. For 30 years, the case went cold. Some people thought Edgar had died in a mysterious accident. Edgar’s mother and the police searched for him for years. They went door to door, passing out flyers. They printed up pictures of Edgar that were computer-generated projections of how he would look as an older man. Even as the years passed, he was not forgotten. In 2014, the police encouraged people to share information about him on Facebook and Twitter. They hoped someone would know something about him, but nothing came of it.
Waiting For The War To End
The people of Vietnam suffered through war from 1955 to 1975, but for one man, the war took much longer to end. Ho Van Thanh was a soldier for more than 15 years. One terrible day, a mine exploded and killed his wife and two of his sons and completely destroyed his home. In a panic, Thanh grabbed his two-year-old son, Ho Van Lang, and fled deep into the jungle where he planned to live until the war ended. Just two years later, the war did end, but Ho and his son had no way of hearing the news. The two of them ended up living in the jungle for more than forty years, believing that the war was still raging on.
The Human Lightning Rod
Against all odds, the remarkable Roy Sullivan was hit by lightning seven times in his life. Roy was a park ranger working in the Shenandoah National Park when he was first hit by lightning. He was standing in a tower in the middle of a storm when he realized he wasn’t in the safest of places. He decided to make a run for it. “I got just a few feet away from the tower, and then, blam!” he said.
Dancing Mania
Alone, in the middle of a silent street, Frau Troffea began to dance. It was July of 1518 in Strasbourg, France, when for no reason, Troffea started to dance. Not long after, bewildered neighbors came to watch. Even stranger, Troffea’s silent dancing was joined by first one neighbor and then another. Their dancing was bizarre, and their faces were expressionless.
Idiom: A Dog Eat Dog World?
When we think of the animal kingdom, some of us imagine ferocious beasts hunting their prey. Wild animals constantly at odds with each other in a survival of the fittest may be the norm, but it’s not always a dog eat dog world. Sometimes unlikely friendships form between surprisingly different types of animals.
Life Without Sleep
Sleep is not optional. After a long enough period of being awake, our brain starts to produce signals that we are tired. As these signals increase in strength, our brain becomes impaired. We all know what it’s like to feel tired to the point of exhaustion. We are less aware, unfocused, and more likely to have accidents. If we become too exhausted, we may even fall asleep on the spot.
