In 1914, Richard Platz, a 20-year-old son of a baker, was hiking when he threw a message in a bottle into the Baltic Sea. Little did he know that it would take over a century before anyone would read his message. Earlier this year, a fisherman named Konrad Fischer pulled the beer bottle out of the ocean.
Frozen Future
Maybe death is just another disease that doctors will one day cure. That was the dream of Professor Robert Ettinger, who is the godfather of cryonics. First dreamed up by Ettinger in the 1960s, cryonics is the freezing of bodies in the hopes of one day being able to bring them back to life in the future. Of course, there is no guarantee that this will ever happen, but the dream is that medical science will advance to the point where this will be possible. Perhaps the idea is not so far-fetched considering that scientists have already revived a small microscopic animal in Siberia after being frozen for 24,000 years.
Can The Language You Speak Make You Healthier?
According to research on language and culture, your health and even your finances are related to the language you speak. Linguists have long known that language can directly influence your perception of the world. For example, in the Kook Thaayorre language, there are no words for left and right. There is no way to explain where something is without using the words north, south, east, and west. Because of this, these people have an innate understanding of which way is north at all times. In some languages, there aren’t different words for blue and green. Speakers of these languages have trouble distinguishing between the two colors.
Time Traveling Seeds And Satellites
There are more than 200,000 species of plant life on planet earth, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. The history of land plants is 420 million years old, and no one can say how many species have lived and died off over the years. While many of these species are gone for good, there is hope that we can bring at least some of these plants back to life. In 2008, scientists in Israel did exactly that. They found 2,000-year-old seeds from a species of date tree that had become extinct. After planting the seeds, amazingly, one of them grew.
Names Affect Children’s Future
‘A rose by any other name would smell as sweet’ is a common Shakespeare reference from Romeo and Juliet. In the play, Juliet tells Romeo that his family name is not important. Their love is what matters. To many soon-to-be mothers and fathers, names do matter. Young parents spend countless hours trying to find the perfect name for their baby.
A World Without Bees
When most people think of honeybees, they think of honey. And while honey is delicious, honeybees actually serve a larger purpose: pollination. Pollination is the process of transferring pollen, which is necessary for many plants to reproduce.
Do You Really Need Food To Survive?
Recently a software engineer named Rob Rhinehart has started producing a drink called Soylent that he believes can safely replace fresh food. It’s not green and it’s not made of people. It’s a drink made from an artificial powder that Rhinehart says contains all the nutrition that humans need to survive without food.
Vision Boards: Making Your Dreams a Reality?
A vision board is a collection of images and pictures that represent your hopes, dreams, and desires. You then arrange those images any way you want on a poster board. And that board is put in a place where you can see it frequently. The idea is that if you surround yourself with images of what you want to become, or what you want to have, you are much more likely to achieve your dreams. In this way, a vision board is like a picture of your future life.
