To “wear your heart on your sleeve” means to show your feelings to the world. It describes a person who hides nothing, and that emotional honesty makes them vulnerable. Stan Larkin didn’t wear his heart on his sleeve. He literally wore his heart on his back.
Mining Asteroids For Water
The Martians were giants with the strength of twenty men. When they attacked Earth, it looked like all was lost. The Martians were just too strong. Fortunately, their immune systems were not strong enough to fight off common earthly bacteria. Edison’s Conquest of Mars is a science fiction story written in 1898 by Garret Putman Serviss. The story starts as the war for Earth ends, and humans chase the aliens back to their home on Mars.
See With Your Ears; Hear With Your Eyes
We see with our eyes and hear with our ears. At least that’s the conventional way to do things, but no one is calling Neil Harbisson conventional. Neil is colorblind. Unlike many colorblind people, who are unable to see just a few specific colors, like red or blue, Neil can’t see any colors except for grey. He has spent his whole life experiencing the world as only different shades of grey. That is until recently.
Empathy For Robots
A hitchhiker died recently in the streets of Philadelphia. The hitchhiker caught rides across Canada and Europe without problems until one tragic day in July of 2015. The hitchhiker was once asked, “Are you afraid?” “Of course I am, but that’s the price of adventure, right?”
The Thorium Car
If you could drive a car that ran for 100 years without ever refueling, would you do it? Some might say that such a car belongs only in the realm of science fiction. But in fact, the technology is real and a concept car has already been developed.
Space Junk
Humans are natural travelers. We evolved into modern humans almost 200,000 years ago. In the last 50,000 years we have traveled across the earth and now live almost everywhere except for Antarctica. If environmental problems on earth continue to increase, one day we may need to find a new home in space. Image by: NASA
This Drone Could Save Your Life
In the 1984 movie, The Terminator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, artificially intelligent machines take over the earth in 2029 and attempt to exterminate the human race. And while that was originally a science fiction fantasy, the fact is that robotics technology has advanced tremendously over the past 30 years since that movie was made.
The Industrialized Chicken
Chicken. Have you eaten it recently? Some people love it, myself included. I like eating it fried, grilled, BBQed, or even roasted straight out of the rotisserie oven. It tastes good and it’s pretty cheap, too, as far as meats go. And most people would agree that it’s delicious, but have you ever thought about how it could be so cheap? Well, just like the shoes you are wearing or the computer you are using, it was mass produced.
